Recently, director Wong Jing spoke publicly about Taiwanese celebrities Big S and Little S, recalling that when he first met them, he described them as “two little dark-skinned girls” and noted that Big S had undergone numerous “whitening injections” to achieve a lighter complexion. He emphasized that Big S’s choices in love are her own life decisions, and outsiders have no right to judge her. His remarks immediately drew public attention and sparked discussions.
However, medical experts point out that the so-called “whitening injections” have limited scientific backing regarding their effectiveness and safety. The commonly used substances in these injections include intravenous vitamin C, tranexamic acid, and reduced glutathione injections. Globally, none of these drugs are officially approved for skin whitening purposes, and there is insufficient clinical evidence supporting their efficacy. Because the body metabolizes and eliminates these drugs through organs such as the liver and kidneys, melanin gradually returns after the drug concentration decreases. Therefore, whitening injections cannot provide permanent whitening, and a single injection will not maintain long-term fair skin.
Moreover, these injections carry potential health risks. Rapid intravenous vitamin C can cause dizziness or fainting, and long-term use of 2–3 grams daily may lead to vitamin C deficiency (scurvy) after discontinuation. Tranexamic acid can cause allergic reactions, shock, rashes, gastrointestinal discomfort, and, due to its blood-clotting effects, may increase the risk of thrombosis; rapid injection may also induce nausea, chest discomfort, rapid heartbeat, or low blood pressure. Reduced glutathione injections may cause rashes, anaphylactic shock, breathing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches, and increased heart rate.
In summary, “whitening injections” are not risk-free. While the entertainment industry places strong emphasis on appearance and pale skin is often idealized, medically these procedures carry risks, do not guarantee lasting results, and should be approached with caution under professional medical guidance.
