On October 24, 2025, the Nanyang Intermediate People’s Court in Henan Province delivered a verdict in a high-profile case involving robbery and intentional homicide. The court sentenced Yu Jinsheng to death for committing both robbery and intentional murder. His accomplice Sha Yujiao received a death sentence with a two-year reprieve for robbery, while another co-defendant, Yang Heng, was sentenced to thirteen years in prison for robbery. In addition, the court imposed supplementary penalties on all three defendants, including deprivation of political rights, confiscation of property, fines, and an order to compensate the victim’s family for their financial losses.

During the trial, investigators established that Yu Jinsheng, Yang Heng, and the victim, Shang Moufeng (online alias “Luo Damei”), had prior interactions. Yu Jinsheng learned that Shang Moufeng was a well-known internet celebrity with significant financial resources. Struggling with long-term gambling debts, Yu Jinsheng conspired with his cohabiting partner Sha Yujiao and Yang Heng to carry out robbery and extortion.

In early July 2023, under Yu Jinsheng’s direction, Yang Heng made multiple attempts to lure Shang Moufeng, all initially unsuccessful. On the evening of July 5, Yang Heng tricked Shang Moufeng via WeChat into visiting Yu Jinsheng’s residence and then left. Yu Jinsheng then restrained Shang Moufeng by binding his hands and feet and, together with Sha Yujiao, transferred him to an unused house belonging to Yu’s relative in Sangshuping Village, Nanhedian Town, Nanzhao County. During this period, the defendants repeatedly threatened and intimidated Shang, coercing him to transfer over 2 million yuan to Sha Yujiao.

In the early hours of July 7, while alone with Shang Moufeng, Yu Jinsheng killed him by strangulation with clothing and stabbing the neck with a short knife. He then buried the body in a sweet potato storage pit. After the crime, Yu Jinsheng and Sha Yujiao returned to Nanyang and disposed of the murder weapon, plastic tape, rope, and Shang’s clothing. Later that afternoon, Yu Jinsheng revisited the burial site to further conceal the body by refilling the pit.

The case attracted widespread public attention due to the victim’s status as an internet celebrity, the brutal nature of the crime, and the large sum of money involved. The court’s strict sentences underscore the legal system’s firm stance against intentional homicide and robbery while emphasizing the protection of the victim’s family and their rights.
