The renowned Macau casino Emperor Palace Casino has officially announced its closure, drawing widespread attention across the region. Located in the city’s upscale New Port District, the luxurious establishment was operated by Emperor Group, chaired by Hong Kong entertainment mogul Albert Yeung Sau Shing. Since its opening, the casino had been famous for its extravagant design and strong ties to the entertainment industry.
One of the most iconic features of the Emperor Palace was its main lobby floor covered with 78 kilograms of pure gold, symbolizing immense wealth and opulence. This lavish detail became a media sensation and a must-see attraction for tourists. When the casino first opened, it hosted a star-studded ceremony attended by Emperor Entertainment’s biggest names — including Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Jacky Cheung, and Joey Yung — underscoring Yeung’s deep influence in Hong Kong’s entertainment world.
However, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, Macau’s gaming industry entered a major restructuring phase. The local government tightened regulations, cracked down on VIP junket operations, and encouraged the sector to shift toward tourism and non-gaming attractions. These changes dealt a heavy blow to smaller casinos that relied heavily on VIP gaming rooms. Despite attempts by the Emperor Palace to reposition itself as a boutique entertainment venue with shows and premium hotel experiences, rising costs and changing visitor demographics made the business increasingly difficult to sustain.
Although Macau’s gaming revenue has been recovering, the market is now dominated by the six major concessionaires — including SJM, Galaxy, and MGM — all of which operate massive integrated resorts. In comparison, the Emperor Palace lacked the financial scale and international branding to compete effectively. According to industry insiders, the decision to cease operations came after months of internal evaluation, citing unsustainable operating expenses, declining profit margins, and failure to secure renewal of its gaming license.
While Albert Yeung continues to expand his business empire in entertainment, real estate, and luxury retail, his withdrawal from the Macau casino scene marks the end of an era — one characterized by glittering gold, celebrity glamour, and Hong Kong’s entertainment influence over Macau’s nightlife. For many locals and longtime visitors, the closure of the Emperor Palace Casino feels nostalgic, symbolizing not only the end of a lavish chapter but also the transformation of Macau from its decadent past toward a more regulated, diversified future.
