Japan’s tech investment giant SoftBank Group has once again shocked global markets. Amid growing concerns over inflated valuations in AI-related stocks, the company made a surprising move — completely selling off all its shares in NVIDIA, the world’s leading AI chipmaker, cashing out approximately $5.83 billion USD (about ¥415 billion RMB). The decision has drawn intense attention as investors try to decipher SoftBank’s next strategic steps in the fast-evolving AI landscape.
According to SoftBank’s financial results released on Tuesday for the second quarter of fiscal year 2025 (ending in September), the company reported a net profit of ¥2.5 trillion (roughly $16.2 billion USD), far exceeding analysts’ average estimate of ¥418.2 billion. This strong performance was primarily driven by robust returns from its aggressive investments in artificial intelligence, including the Vision Fund, which holds stakes in numerous fast-growing AI startups.
Notably, the NVIDIA sale has not yet been reflected in the company’s second-quarter financial report. SoftBank disclosed that it had sold approximately 32.1 million NVIDIA shares in October, with a total value of $5.83 billion USD, but did not specify the reason for the sale or whether it plans to reinvest in NVIDIA or other semiconductor firms. Analysts suggest that the move was likely aimed at locking in profits after NVIDIA’s stock price surged more than twofold this year, representing a strategic rebalancing of SoftBank’s investment portfolio.
In addition to the blockbuster earnings, SoftBank also announced a 1-for-4 stock split effective January 1, 2026, in an effort to improve stock liquidity and attract more retail investors.
Currently, SoftBank’s investment portfolio includes some of the most sought-after AI companies in the world — notably OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT. These holdings have generated significant unrealized gains and fueled SoftBank’s stock price, which soared 78% over the three months leading up to September, marking its best quarterly performance since 2005.
Market observers generally believe SoftBank’s sell-off of NVIDIA shares does not signal pessimism about the AI sector. Instead, it reflects a strategic pivot — shifting from passive equity holdings to more active participation in the AI ecosystem. As companies like OpenAI and Arm continue to expand their global influence, SoftBank remains well-positioned to play a central role in shaping the next phase of the global AI revolution.
