This shocking case, which stunned overseas Chinese communities, originated from a 16-year-long online feud between two Chinese women and ultimately escalated into a bloody attack inside the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver on May 25, 2021.
The roots of the conflict trace back to 2005, when the two parties, Qin Qin “Catherine” Shen and Jing “Becky” Lu, met on an online forum serving Chinese immigrants. What began as a minor dispute quickly spiraled into an intense and prolonged cycle of online insults and defamation that lasted for years. The two repeatedly hurled deeply personal attacks at each other, using demeaning language such as “poor loser,” “old spinster,” and “a woman no one wants,” turning the conflict into a relentless war of words.
In May 2021, the long-simmering hostility culminated in a courtroom confrontation when the two met in person over a defamation lawsuit. Shen entered the courthouse carrying a handbag that concealed a fish knife and a hammer. Before the judge had even taken the bench, she suddenly launched an attack on Lu inside the courtroom.
Lu was stabbed multiple times—some reports say dozens of blows—suffering severe injuries to her head, chest, lungs, and even her heart. The courtroom was left covered in blood, but Lu ultimately survived after emergency medical treatment.
In 2023, the trial court found Shen guilty on four charges, including attempted murder, and sentenced her to 12 years in prison. Shen appealed the verdict, arguing that she was suffering from mental illness at the time of the attack and that the sentence was excessively harsh. However, on October 30, 2025, the British Columbia Court of Appeal rejected her arguments, upheld the original ruling, and dismissed her request for a reduced sentence.
Court records later revealed chilling details about the premeditation behind the attack. Shen had consumed alcohol beforehand to steel her nerves and deliberately dressed in red clothing, intending to conceal the visibility of blood splatter after the assault. As of now, Shen remains incarcerated, and after accounting for time already served, she is expected to spend approximately eight more years in prison.
