On the evening of March 26, a tragic stabbing incident occurred at the “Sunshine City” shopping landmark in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, Japan. A man entered a store on the second floor, fatally stabbing a female employee before turning the knife on himself. Surveillance footage from the scene captured chaos as multiple staff members ran in different directions, shouting for help and urging others to move back. At the time of the attack, several customers and staff were inside the store, and nearby shops promptly closed their doors in response to the incident. Local authorities received a report around 7:20 p.m. that a man was armed with a knife and committing a violent act. According to the footage, a man in his twenties suddenly stabbed the female employee in the neck, causing her to collapse immediately. He then inflicted self-harm with the same knife. Both victims were transported to a hospital unconscious and were later confirmed deceased.

The female victim was 21 years old, and the assailant was 26. The two had first met in December 2023 while working a part-time job in Hachioji City and began dating in October of the following year. Their relationship ended in July 2025. On December 25 of last year, the woman had reported to the police that her ex-boyfriend had been persistently harassing her and following her. Police accepted the report, and while escorting her home, they encountered the suspect nearby and subsequently arrested him under the Anti-Stalking Law.

Following police advice, the woman temporarily stayed with relatives from January 5 to February 6 before returning to her own residence. Up until March 12, authorities had contacted her nine times via phone and other means to monitor the situation. Reports indicate that no unusual behavior was observed from the man after his release. A police spokesperson stated, “We believe we had taken the best possible measures.” The investigation into the circumstances of this incident is ongoing, as authorities continue to gather information and examine potential lapses.

This case underscores the serious consequences of stalking and harassment, and has sparked renewed discussions in Japan about preventive measures, police interventions, and the protection of individuals at risk.
